This was based on a directive issued by DPS Commissioner Clyde K. Norita dated June 17, 2008.
Norita said the limited resources both in manpower and the number of vehicles have forced DPS to re-think of the services it is providing for funeral escorts.
“The frequency of funerals and utilization of multiple patrol cards and personnel has tied down our emergency personnel on non-emergency assignments such as this,” Norita said.
He added that aside from one marked vehicle or motorcycle, no other personnel will be used for traffic control at all traffic light intersection or any other intersections.
“The motorcade shall follow all traffic laws including traffic lights and intersection control,” Norita said.
He added that there is also no necessity in holding or diverting traffic as a funeral motorcade is a non-emergency.
“All vehicles involved in the motorcade will be advised by an assigned officer to stay within the posted speed limit and follow all traffic and signal signs,” Norita said.
He added that the traffic section of DPS is directed to conduct a public education on this new directive.
Norita said the directive is aimed to address the burden on DPS resources when it provides funeral escorts.
