DPS rescues distressed vessel

Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric F. David said DPS received a distress call at about 8 a.m. on May 16, 2009 from Thomas Muna, owner of the fishing boat.

David said boating safety officers and ports police officers who were immediately dispatched to respond to the scene found the distressed vessel west off the Garapan Fishing Base with two occupants.

The responding officers towed the vessel back to shore at about 9:15 a.m.

According to the boat owner, they left the Fishing Base at about 7:30 a.m. to go trolling but half an hour later, the vessel’s engine stopped.

Efforts to restart the engine failed, prompting the boat occupants to call for assistance.

Muna and his companion Melvin Sablan were safe.

David said there were no violations or citations.
