DPS seizes marijuana plants in pots

A DPS official, who declined to be identified, said no arrests have been made but they are still conducting investigation to find the individuals behind the cultivation of the marijuana plants.

The official said the marijuana plants were seized in separate eradication operations from farms in Talafofo, Mt. Tapochao and Marpi.

Already about six feet tall, the marijuana plants were being grown in huge pots and pails, but the official said there were more marijuana plants on the ground.

The official said planting marijuana in pots and pails is a common practice on island.

Estimates from previous reports showed that each six-foot tall plant can yield between $800 and $1,200 in street value.

DPS cannot disclose details as investigation is still on-going.

In July 2008, the Drug Enforcement Agency with the aid of the local police seized several marijuana plants following a three-day operation on Saipan and Tinian.

Eeach year, the DEA uproots hundreds of marijuana plants and trees valued at tens of thousands of dollars from different villages on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
