THE Department of Public Safety has announced 25 positions for police cadets for the 27th police academy cycle, DPS Commissioner Clement Bermudes said in an interview.
“We’re estimating to start in November,” he added. “This is critical so that we can fill positions within the department and continue the partnership with the community. The new recruits will also allow the department to reduce overtime. Overtime puts a lot of stress on our officers. We want to make sure that our officers are rejuvenated, and are taking care of themselves so that they come to work prepared and ready to support and serve the public.”
“If you’re looking to join the police, sign up and apply at the Office of Personnel Management,” Bermudes said.
Cooperative education program
In other news, seven seniors from Marianas High School, Kagman High School, and Saipan Southern High School are working for DPS under the cooperative education program until January.
“We brought [them in] after the job fair that was held a few weeks ago,” Bermudes said.
“These students are the future generation of officers. They are interested in joining the department someday. We are excited to be rotating them for the next three months so they can have thorough exposure to what we do here in the department. I’m very transparent, so as commissioner, I want to really expose what we do in the department and this is something I aim to continue to do, so that our community knows what we do here,” Bermudes said.
“Typically, the hope is the students get exposed to what it’s like to be an officer and that they will like the experience so they can decide whether it’s a career field they want to get into. This is really a good way to have them find out what they want for their future. We hope there will be another cycle. This is only the first semester,” he added.
“We are excited to have these students with us. It’s been a while since we had this. The program has been successful in the past. We hope they will act as our representatives out there in their respective schools and share what we do here in the department,” Bermudes said.
