DPW, OPD, NMTech sign MOU on solid waste management training

THE Department of Public Works, the Office of Planning & Development and the Northern Marianas Technical Institute on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding that aims to meet the educational, training and workforce needs of the CNMI for solid waste management.

The signatories are DPW Secretary Ray N. Yumul, NMTech Chief Executive Officer Jodina C. Attao and OPD Deputy Director Chris Sablan.

Also present were acting DPW Solid Waste Manager Ken Aldan, NMTech instructor James Benavente, NMTech Marketing and Outreach Coordinator Ben Babauta and OPD Solid Waste Engineer Rick Miranda Sr.

Under the training program, participants will learn about the following:

1) The safe use of personnel protective equipment, emergency response, spill response, equipment maintenance and operations.

2) Landfill operation, which involves scale house operations, spotting and waste screening, cell construction and compaction, and leachate management.

3) Transfer and conveyance stations, which include environmental concerns, recordkeeping, communications, efficient operations, and regulatory and permit compliance.

 Babauta said the training program may be launched at the end of the year.
