DPW to remove unpermitted political signs from public sites

THE Department of Public Works will remove from public rights-of-way all unpermitted political signs on Saipan, Tinian and Rota beginning Sept. 27, 2024.

DPW Secretary Ray N. Yumul made the announcement Thursday, reminding all candidates of Public Law 20-52, which requires them to submit a request to erect political signs to the office of the DPW secretary.

Yumul noted that there are 61 candidates in this year’s election. He said DPW’s Right-of-Way Section staff members are currently conducting a survey to determine who among the candidates have erected signs on public rights-of-way but have not submitted a request.

As of Thursday, Yumul said those who had already submitted requests to erect political signs were Senate President Edith Deleon Guerrero of Saipan, who is seeking reelection; Rep. Manny Gregory T. Castro, who is challenging her; U.S. delegate candidates Edwin Propst, Kimberlyn King-Hinds and John Oliver DLR Gonzales; House candidates Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez, Rep. Blas Jonathan Attao, Rep. Ralph N. Yumul, Rep. Angelo Camacho, Rep. Marissa R. Flores, Rep. Diego Vincent F. Camacho, Rep. Malcolm Omar; Saipan Senate candidate Luis M. Sablan and House candidate Daniel I. Aquino.

“DPW shall be removing all unpermitted signs beginning Sept. 27, 2024,” Yumul said.

To prevent this, he said, candidates must submit a letter of request addressed to the DPW secretary and delivered to the DPW administration office at the First Hawaiian Bank building on Beach Road in Oleai no later than Sept. 26, 2024.

The request letter must include locations, materials and dimensions with sample of the sign image.
