Driver cited for causing five-car collision

According to Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric F. David, DPS received a call reporting a multiple car collision at 8:01 a.m. along Chalan Monsignor Road.

David said officers from the traffic and patrol section were immediately dispatched to the scene with rescue personnel and para-medics from the fire division.

Preliminary investigation showed that the driver of the white  Toyota Tercel stopped on the inner lane signaling to enter the driveway leading to her residence on As Terlaje Hill when a Toyota Corolla that was traveling westbound on the same lane failed to stop, hitting and colliding with the Tercel.

David said  as bystanders and the operator of the Toyota Tercel were trying to push the two vehicles off the highway, a westbound brown Cadillac collided with the Tercel.

In its attempt to maneuver the brown Cadillac away from a head-on collision with the Tercel, the Cadillac swerved into the outer lane and struck a red Nissan pick-up truck which was traveling on the west direction.

The pick-up sustained moderate damage to the rear left mud flap while the Cadillac sustained extensive damage to its front left and right portion.

David said while a beige Lexus was passing by, it was struck by flying debris from the brown Cadillac and the white Tercel, causing minor to moderate damage to the Lexus’s left rear door and the front right portion.

David said alcohol was not a factor in this multiple crash.

He added that based on statements gathered on the scene, the operator of the white Corolla Toyota was at fault and caused the accident by violating Title 9 Commonwealth Code which states that “in no event shall any motor vehicle be operated at a speed greater than will permit it to be stopped within the assured clear distance ahead.”

David said the multiple crash caused a traffic jam for almost an hour. All the operators were safe and no injuries were reported.
