After serving her sentence, Cassandra Camacho will be placed on probation for two years. She was also ordered to pay the victim’s medical and funeral expenses as restitution.
She started serving her sentence on Sunday.
The 62-year-old driver of the sedan, Sergio Apostol, sustained life-threatening injuries, and after three days in the intensive care unit of the hospital, he was pronounced dead following cardiac arrest.
At the time of the incident, Cassandra Camacho, was 17 years old. She turned 18 this month.
On Jan. 22, 2020, the Attorney General’s Office charged her with one count of reckless driving.
Chief prosecutor John Bradley, in an email on Monday, told Variety: “We hope that young people take this case as a reminder that momentary recklessness behind the wheel of a vehicle can cause innocent people to die.”
“We all need to slow down and be careful,” Bradley added.
According to the AG’s office, Camacho drove or operated a motor vehicle on a highway in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of the persons or property by failing to control her speed or by speeding in gross excess of the posted speed limit or by failing to keep a proper lookout or combination of these traffic violations.
