Heckling and jeering greeted the Covenant’s motorcade which involved hundreds of vehicles that passed by the Krammer Beach main pavilion where Republican supporters were gathered.
The Covenant’s motorcade was led by Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos.
After a heated exchange of words, a Covenant supporter got down from his car and tried to confront one of the Republicans.
But a Department of Public Safety officer stepped in and pacified the two individuals.
The driver then returned to his car and continued the stalled motorcade.
Additional DPS Tinian officers and CNMI Marshals arrived to prevent more face-to-face heckling.
Asked for comment, Tinian Republican Party president Edward Dela Cruz Shai called on their supporters to respect the other parties’ supporters and to maintain and promote peace on their island.
He added, “The “[Covenant Party] may have a lot of vehicles, but they don’t have the votes.
Today, the Republicans will have their final rally at the Little League baseball field here.
The atmosphere at the Republican gathering at Krammer Beach was festive.
Families and their children listened to the GOP candidates and expressed their support for the Republican ticket.
First-time voter Jack Villagomez, 19, said he is excited to have an opportunity to choose the CNMI’s next leaders.
He said he will vote for the GOP candidates.
“They got the heart. They care for the people suffering and they want everything to be equal and fair,” he added.
El Shai, 18, is also a first-time voter.
He said he and his friends also believe in the Republican Party’s vision.
“I feel very confident that my party is going to win. I’m ready to see changes. That’s what I want,” he added.
