Eller: First Friday Films get overwhelming response from community

Eller, one of the guest speakers of the Rotary Club meeting at the Hyatt on Tuesday, said during the screening of the last two films, the Visitor Center was packed.

“We are very glad to see a big attendance,” Eller said.

Through these movies, she said DEQ and its partners aim to persuade members of the community to be involved and find ways to address different environmental issues.

On Sept. 3, “Dirt” was the featured  movie. It discusses man’s reliance on the Earth’s soil and the damage done to it.

On Aug. 6, over 150 saw “SharkWater.”

Aric Bickel of DEQ said “it was great to see so many in the community interested in protecting our shark populations.”

DEQ, the National Park Service and the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance have partnered to offer free environmental films to the public on the first Friday of every month at the American Memorial Park Visitor Center.

The First Friday Films started on July 2 with a free screening of “Black Wave,” a documentary on the 20-year legacy of the Exxon Valdez oil supertanker which ran aground in Alaska and spilled millions of gallons of crude oil into the Arctic Ocean.
