Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed the extension upon the recommendation of the Emergency Management Office, said its public information officer Juan T. Camacho.
EMO deputy special assistant Joaquin P. Omar, in a memorandum, said there were no reports of eruptive activity in the past week, and “the volcano appears to have entered a quiescent period.”
But, he added, “active activity, including gas and ash emissions” may resume again at any time.
Hence, he said, maintaining tthe off-limits zone from 10 nautical miles to three nautical miles around Anatahan should be maintained until further notice.
Under these conditions, restriction of entry to Anatahan island should continue until a thorough scientfic is done and the findings suggest otherwise, Omar said.
