EMO: Rain signals start of monsoon season

EMO said there is no storm but the community should expect scattered showers until Saturday.

There will be a sunny weather on Sunday, EMO stated.

Based on the information received by EMO from the National Weather Service on Guam,  0.56 inches of rain had fallen as of 11:27 a.m. yesterday.

Weather satellite and radar showed that substantial additional rainfall was approaching, and if total rainfall was enough to temporarily overwhelm drainage systems, the problems would likely persist for several hours after the rain stops.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated river or stream flows, ponding of water in urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage areas and low lying spots. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain.

Areas affected were San Antonio, Chalan Kanoa, Susupe, Garapan, Koblerville, Tanapag, San Roque and in-front of Saipan Ice in Lower Base.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is strongly advising the residents and especially motorist to take extra precautionary measures in low-lying prone areas and while driving on public highways for ponds of water and sometimes low visibilities.
