Employer owes missing guest worker uncollected salary

“Definitely he still has uncollected salary from the employer,” Mrs. Castro said. “We don’t deny that we still have an obligation to him.”

But she said they are still tracking all documents  signed by their workers, including Matubis, to determine the actual amount owed to him.

Before she left Saipan in November, Alex Matubis’s wife, Malou, recovered payroll documents which she said detailed the amount of the uncollected salary of her husband.

She said her husband’s employer, based on the document, owed him $5,738.50 as of Jan. 3, 2008.

But Mrs. Castro said the figure was inaccurate because they were able to pay Mr. Matubis and other workers $3,000 on Jan. 18, 2008.

She said Mr. Matubis signed and acknowledged that he received the amount.

Mrs. Castro also doubts whether Mrs. Matubis and Irene N. Tantiado, then president of the United Workers Movement, NMI, have the documents regarding the missing guest worker’s unclaimed salary.

Last December, Tantiado showed to the Variety the payroll summary for the five workers of  Castro & Associates, including Mr. Matubis, for a bi-weekly period in 2007.

Based on the documents, his salary varied.

He collected $535 for June 18 to 29 and $507 for July 2 to 13.

His lowest payroll amounted to $430 which covered 11 working days.

Alex Matubis worked as a draftsman for Castro & Associates for 22 years, and has been missing since July 29, 2008.

Last month, skeletal remains were recovered in Marpi together with some of his belongings.

Police are trying to obtain his dental records to determine if the remains belonged to him.
