THE Region 9 administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will make a brief visit to Saipan on June 23 to conduct an onsite inspection of the island’s “environmental hot spots.”
Wayne Nastri will make a brief stopover on Sunday enroute to Palau. Nastri will visit the Puerto Rico dumpsite to assess the commonwealth’s solid waste issues.
He will also visit the waste transfer station, which is still under construction, the Marpi landfill site, and the unexploded ordnance storage site.
At San Roque beach, he will inspect the unexploded ordnance embedded in a beach rock about 200 yards from an elementary school.
During these visits, Nastri will be with Environmental Quality officials led by Deputy Director Tony Guerrero, Alberta Carpenter of the Solid Waste Division and EPA’s Michelle Rogow.
In Tanapag, Nastri will observe the cleanup of the PCB-laced soil, the old fuel tanks, the factories at nearby Lower Base and the proposed EPA-assisted homestead site in upper Tanapag.
