EUCON International College has a new provisional license to operate in the CNMI.
Nearly three months after the State Board of Regents revoked Eucon’s provisional license due to complaints about insufficient educational facilities, the board voted 6 to 1 yesterday to approve the college’s request for a new provisional license.
The license is valid for seven months.
However, the regents said that during the seven-month period they would like to see significant improvements at Eucon, particularly its educational facilities and faculty.
They would also like Eucon to allow board representatives to conduct site visits and monitor the improvements.
“We just want to make sure that (Eucon) students have the opportunity (to get the best education that they could have),” Regent Galvin Guerrero said.
Eucon President Christian Wei welcomed the board’s decision. However, he said the regents should also further examine their policies.
“I just want to see the college to work. There’s a lot of things about the board’s policies that are not clear. In my opinion, the regents need to understand their role which is to support and give assistance to quality education,” Wei told Variety.
Wei assured that Eucon is willing and prepared to initiate changes. “This provisional license gives us seven months. During this period, they would like all our faculty members to come in. They also want us to focus on our majors,” he said.
Last March, the board revoked Eucon’s license after three of its students complained about the school’s alleged insufficient educational facilities, particularly its lack of nursing laboratories.
The board immediately formed a team to investigate the allegations. It then decided to revoke Eucon’s nine-month provisional license. But Wei claimed that the decision was arbitrary because they were not given the chance to implement improvements within a certain period.
Eucon is currently not allowed to offer nursing programs. However, it can still offer associate degree programs in arts, science and biblical studies as well as review courses for nursing students.
