Ex-garment worker sues employers for discrimination

Guoyan Sui named U.S. CNMI Development Corp. and Yee Tung Garment Co. Ltd. as respondents in her complaint which alleges violations of the Civil Rights Act.

For count one of her complaint of discrimination due to pregnancy, Sui is asking for compensatory damages, declaratory relief for discriminatory employment procedure, back wages and compensation, award for all costs, and other relief.

Sui said she started working at the factory on Oct. 24, 2007 for a $4.05 rate for 40 hours a week.

On Feb. 11, 2008, Sui told her factory manager, Ms. Zhang, that she was pregnant.

Sui said Zhang told her that she must “take care” of her situation.

On Feb. 27, 2008, Sui aborted her pregnancy. In April of the same year, Sui said she was served with a written notice that her contract, which ended on the 24th, would not be renewed.
