Ex-lawmaker found guilty of assault

KOROR (Palau Horizon) —Former Peleliu State Legislator Lili Iekar was convicted of assaulting Ltelak Franz with a dangerous weapon in connection with an incident that took place at the Peleliu Dock in Aug. 2000.

The defendant, Kailani Meltel and Iekar’s husband, Olsingch Iekar, were charged with assaulting Franz.

The defendant was also charged for attacking Monica Ichiro.

After a two and a half day trial in late January, the Trial Division of the Supreme Court found the defendant guilty and sentenced her on March 25 to a 60-day jail term at the Koror Jail. She was also placed on a four-year probation.

In addition, the court ordered her to pay a $200 fine and restitution to Franz for her hospital bills.

The defendant will also serve 100 hours of community service.

Meltel pleaded guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Nov. 2000 for participating in the attack. The charges against Iekar are still pending.
