CPA earlier asked the FAA if it could use a portion of the federal grant allotted for a specific airport project.
The Saipan airport’s two main generators have broken down due to frequent power outages.
CPA acting Executive Director Lee Cabrera yesterday said the two new generators will cost $100,000 each and will be delivered within a 16-week timeframe from the placement of order.
He said the small generator CPA currently uses is strictly for runway lights.
“Our priority is air safety,” Cabrera said. “Aircraft landing and takeoff are most critical in our operation and our remaining generator is strictly to ensure that we have lights in our runway all the time.”
According to Cabrera, CPA has already advised CUC about the situation at the airport.
“We’re counting on CUC commitment to assist the airport in times of need,” he said.
Cabrera said the two new generators can provide the power needed by the airport for its terminal, conveyor systems and air-conditioning units.
The lack of generators at the airport has affected some flights carrying tourists from various destinations.
