FAA to install explosive detection machine

THE Federal Aviation Administration will install the latest explosive detection machines in CNMI airports before the year ends.

Commonwealth Ports Authority Executive Director Carlos H. Salas said the availability of the detecting device in all U.S. airports was highlighted in the recently held regional security conference he attended in Nevada.

“This is one big item that’s new to everybody that is needed for explosive detection. We’re getting that,” Salas said in n interview.

He said the CNMI needs at least two detection machines, while Guam needs three or four.

Other airports in the U.S. will need as many as five or more.

“The demand is big. Remember that there are about 490 U.S. airports. Production of these machines is a critical issue but the goal is to meet the Dec. 2002 deadline,” Salas said.

He said the machine can detect any form of explosive device that may be found in cargoes and luggage.
