Station director Bob Springer in an interview on Thursday said they are dismantling the station that broadcast religious programs to Russia, China and Indonesia.
A non-profit missionary organization that airs programs about the message of Jesus Christ, FEBC has noted a decrease in its audience, Springer said.
The big changes in communications technology has reduced the size of their audience, he added.
“Our type of technology of broadcast is not as important as it was 20 years ago so our audience is not as big anymore,” Springer said.
The emergence of modern technology, he added, has allowed their audience to listen through satellite radio, MP3 files, cellphones and the internet.
When the station went on air in 1984, he recalled that the program ministry was very significant to the people in China and the then-Soviet Union.
FEBC broadcasts by means of shortwave radio. It was long distance broadcasting, said Springer.
It’s sad that they are closing the facility on island, he added.
Their organization, however, has many other facilities so it’s possible that he would transfer to one of those. Their network is very large, he said.
Variety learned that the high power rate — reaching over $30,000 a month — was also one of the main reasons for FEBC’s decision.
