Federal court reschedules hearing of defendants in ice case

In separate orders issued on Aug. 24, U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson granted the stipulation to continue hearing separately filed by Chun Mei Lin, Lian Sheng, Huang Biao and Huang Biao on Aug. 23.

Lin’s lawyer Colin M. Thompson and Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric S. O’Malley agreed to a stipulation to continue the hearing for Chun Mei Lin who was arrested on Aug. 19, stating that the case is complex and the counsel must first review the voluminous evidence in order to properly advise his client.

Munson granted the stipulation submitted by defendant Huang Biao and reset the preliminary hearing for Sept. 8, 2009 after the court found good cause and because the defendant has retained new counsel.

Federal agents arrested Huang and Lian on Monday last week after they tried to sell 947 grams of ice to a confidential source in Susupe.

Lin and Huang were arrested separately at the Saipan airport as they attempted to leave the CNMI last week.

The two sold 14.1 grams of ice to a confidential source worth $6,000 in Chalan Kanoa on Aug. 29, 2008, the prosecution said.
