DFW staff communicated essential information to NOAA response team that allowed for the assessment of the best course of action.
DFW was also essential in the coordination of response logistics such as euthanasia, carcass retrieval, transportation, storage and necropsy.
As a result of such coordinated efforts, valuable biological samples were obtained from the deep diving cryptic species.
The samples, according to NOAA, will provide important information about Cuvier’s beak whales, and are important to cetacean research and management efforts across the Pacific Islands.
In addition, NOAA expressed its gratitude for outstanding service by DFW biologist Michael C. Tenorio who was a crucial partner throughout the response.
Other staff that were commended for their exceptional support are Francis S. Buniag, Gregory P. Camacho, Jay Camacho, William Otto Dunn III, Joe Iguel, Paul Lisua, Jess Omar, Lee Perlow, Paul Radley and Pete Ruzevich.
