Feds want PSS to integrate AIDS-HIV education into its program

THE federal government wants the Public School System to develop and integrate AIDS-HIV education into a comprehensive health education program.

The federal government will earmark a grant for this program in fiscal year 2003. Records showed that PSS received a $98,000 grant to finance AIDS-HIV related education activities this year.

Next year, however, the grant will be reduced to $88,100.

PSS federal program officer William Matson said the funding for AIDS-HIV education is primarily spent on classroom materials/curriculum and for teacher/staff training opportunities offered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control.

As of 2001, 25 cases of HIV/AIDS had been recorded in the Northern Marianas.
