THE Office of the Governor, CNMI Hazard Mitigation Grant Program is pleased to announce that the state hazard mitigation plan has been officially approved following thorough review and evaluation by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Effective July 28, 2024 through July 27, 2029, state hazard mitigation plans must be updated and resubmitted for approval every five years.
An approved state hazard mitigation plan is a condition of receiving certain FEMA, non-emergency assistance and mitigation grants from the following programs:
Public Assistance Categories C-G
Fire Management Assistance Grants
Hazard Mitigation Grant Program
Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Post-Fire
Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities
Flood Mitigation Assistance
Safeguarding Tomorrow Revolving Loan Fund
Pre-Disaster Mitigation
The CNMI Hazard Mitigation Grant Program aims to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation and maintenance of this plan throughout the five-year period. Additionally, it will be treated as a living document. This significant development marks a major step forward in the CNMI’s ongoing commitment to minimize the impact of disasters by reducing loss of life and property.
According to FEMA observations, “Every $1 invested in disaster mitigation saves $6.”
