Instead, he said, the military will only stay in power until all its objectives are achieved.
Commodore Bainimarama made this known to Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Nadi on Monday.
“It is best that I briefly give you an update on the Fiji situation as there is much hype and misinformation about the political developments here,” said Bainimarama
“The military, essentially assumed control of the government with clear objectives to eliminate corruption, racial discrimination policies and practices, and to bring about necessary reforms in the area of public service, governance as well as the electoral system in an effort to build a better and more progressive Fiji,” he said.
“The military did not intervene for the purpose of remaining in control and power beyond a reasonable time than what would be required to achieve the above objectives.”
Bainimarama said that “steady progress” was being made to return Fiji to “true and genuine parliamentary democracy.”
“We just cannot go to elections because the international community want us to go to elections,” he said.
“Fiji will definitely return to parliamentary democracy, the timing of which will be determined by the people of Fiji alone.”
Bainimarama thanked China for fully recognizing Fiji’s sovereignty and adopting a policy of non-interference in Fiji’s domestic affairs.
