Fiji president to meet local leaders, businessmen

VISITING Fiji President Josefa Iloilo will meet with local businessmen, government officials as well as women groups during his five-day stay on Saipan.

Iloilo arrived here at 5 p.m. yesterday on a Continental Airlines plane from Narita, Japan.

He is accompanied by Fiji First Lady Adi Salaseini Kavu, and his permanent secretary Dr. N.C. Goneyali.

The presidential delegation was welcomed at the airport by Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente.

From the airport, the president and his party proceeded to Pacific Islands Club where they met members of the local Fijian community.

The Fijian community performed special welcoming rites at the hotel lobby.

Fiji’s first couple traveled to Saipan to attend two key events that will take place on Friday.

The president will be the keynote speaker at the leaders meeting at Dai-Ichi Hotel. He will also be the guest of honor during the Annual National Day of Prayer on Friday evening. This event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Hopwood Junior High School.

“This is an invitation to everybody to hear words of encouragement and cooperation for the transformation of our community,” Cliff Shoemake, chairman of the Annual National Day of Prayer committee, said.

Shoemake attended yesterday’s Rotary Club meeting to invite its members to the events.

Before leaving Saipan on Saturday, the president will hold a breakfast meeting at Aqua Resort Club.

The first lady, for her part, will meet with women groups on Saturday morning at PIC.

The president’s meeting with government officials would occur tomorrow. PIC, one of the top sponsors for the presidential trip, has provided its presidential suite to Fiji’s first couple.

With the presidential party is Iloilo’s butler, a lady in waiting for the first lady and security personnel.
