Fiji president visits NMI next week

FIJI President Josefa Iloilo and First Lady Kavu Iloilo are scheduled to arrive on Saipan next week to speak in two events, including the 3rd Annual National Prayer meeting organized by local Christian organizations.

Fiji’s first couple will arrive on May 22 and stay in the CNMI until May 25.

On May 24, the president will be the keynote speaker in the community transformation meeting which will be attended by government and socio-civic leaders.

On May 25, Iloilo will attend the National Day of Prayer, which is normally held every first Tuesday of May, but was postponed this year to a later date to accommodate the president’s visit.

The gathering’s theme is “United Under God for Transformation.”

Both events are scheduled to be held at Dai-Ichi Hotel in Garapan.

“President Iloilo is uniquely qualified to speak on these subjects as only two years ago, Fiji was enveloped in a disaster of epic proportions. Their economy was virtually destroyed and their nation was divided as never before. However, today under the leadership of President Iloilo, Fiji has recovered and is beginning to prosper both economically and socially. Fiji is in the process of transformation,” New Covenant Life Church Head Pastor Cliff Shoemake said in an interview with Variety.

He said his group has sent an invitation to the Office of the Governor for a possible meeting between the Fiji president and Gov. Juan N. Babauta.

During his stay on Saipan, Uluivuda will also meet with the members of Fijian community.

“We’re excited to meet our president. Of course, it’s a big thing for me to see our own president here,” Villy Kaitabu, a Fijian who resides on Saipan, said.

Manuelito P. Rey, pastor of Cornerstone Church in Koblerville, said next week’s events will call for unity and reconciliation among the people to promote peace, growth and transformation.

“This is an important thing to do—to pray and unite for the transformation of the whole society,” he said.

The events are organized jointly by New Covenant Life, Cornerstone, Life in the Son, the local Fijian community and other organizations.
