Finance employees complete governmental accounting training

EMPLOYEES of the Department of Finance completed the Introduction to Governmental Accounting and Reporting training last month.

With funding support from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Insular Affairs, Graduate School USA and Pacific & Virgin Islands Training Initiatives was able to deliver the 20-hour course in person to the 56 Department of Finance employees on Aug. 19-22, 2024.

“Overall, I am were very pleased with the course, providing the background of government accounting and the roles each division and office play and how our jobs impact each other,” shared an employee from the Division of Financial Services.

“The Jeopardy game was awesome; testing our knowledge from the class exercises and lectures,” said a participant from the Department of Public Lands.

The instructor for this four-day training was Jeanne Yamamura, who has more than 30 years of experience in industry and academia. Licensed as a certified public accountant in California and Nevada, she began as an auditor with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG) in San Francisco, California, and moved on to work as an audit manager for Touche Ross & Co. in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas.

The course provided an overview of governmental accounting systems and includes a basic introduction to accounting principles, internal controls, and documentation requirements.

The training was also attended by 34 employees from the Department of Commerce, the Department of Labor, the Department of Lands and Natural Resources, the Department of Public Lands, the Public School System, the Office of the Lt. Governor, the Office of the Public Auditor, the Office of Management and Budget, the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, the Public Assistance Office, the Criminal Justice Planning Agency, the Commonwealth Medicaid Agency, the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Northern Marianas Humanities Council, and the NMI Museum.

The Department of Finance continues to strive for excellence in the services it delivers to the CNMI.

The department is comprised of the following divisions: Treasury & Passport Acceptance Office, Customs Biosecurity, Financial Services, Procurement Services,  Revenue & Taxation, and the Office of Information Technology.
