Fitial vetoes Rota dialysis bill

Introduced by Rep. Teresita A. Santos, Ind.-Rota, the local bill proposed to appropriate over $38,000 from the island’s poker and pachinko license fees.

H.L.B. 17-27 would provide $300 to each terminally ill patient, and $150 to those living outside Rota medical referral housing facilities in September, October and November.

The bill would also appropriate $3,000 for the Bisita Luta International Derby; $14,550 for the Rota Mayor’s Office operations; $2,000 for the Rota Municipal Council’s rent; and $900 for the Rota Department of Public Safety cadets’ housing payment.

Fitial said Rota collected $212,000 in poker  license fees.

Of the amount, he added, $206,100 had been appropriated for  medical referrals, the mayor’s office and Northern Marianas College’s student housing under Rota Local Law 17-1 as well as for the scholarship foundation and the youth recreation and sports facility under R.L.L .17-3.

The remaining balance is only $5,900, the governor said.
