Fitial withdraws Hofschneider’s appointment

Hofschneider was nominated last month to represent Tinian on the college board.

The Senate’s Committee on Executive Appointment and Government Investigation has yet to confirm the nomination.

On Wednesday last week, Hofschneider wrote Fitial and Lt. Gov. Eloy S.Inos, telling them that he would have to “step aside for another individual.”

On the same day he received Hofschneider’s letter, Fitial informed Senate President Paul A. Manglona, Ind.-Rota, that it was with deep regret that he was withdrawing his appointment of Hofschneider at this time.

“I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and other members of the Senate,” Fitial said.

Hofschneider, in his letter, told the governor and lt. governor that he was honored to be appointed to the NMC board of regents.

He said the administration’s decision to make him a member of “this elite group of individuals” exemplified their level of trust and expectations in him.

Unfortunately, he added, the appointment “caught him in a period when he needs to focus his energy and attention on certain aspects” of his life.

“I believe that if I am not able to give my best, I might as well not accept the responsibility for I will not only be disappointing you and those responsible in my appointment and my confirmation, but the rest of the CNMI citizens,” Hofschneider told Fitial and Inos.
