Some foreign students said the Department of Labor told them that it was “not aware of that rule.”
According to the Department of Commerce, the regulation was passed on by the Division of Immigration.
Immigration previously handled the processing of foreign student entry permits.
A foreign student, who declined to be identified, said Commerce told him that “it is okay to work for 10 hours a week as long as I inform Labor about it. But when I asked Labor, they said they are not aware of the policy.”
According to Commerce, a foreign student may engage in a part-time job in a private company for not more than 10 hours a week in a job registered with the Department of Labor as a part-time job.
The student said he and some of his classmates want to know if they are really allowed to have a part-time job while studying full-time.
Commerce, Immigration and Labor should work together and issue a clarification, the student said.
