Former House floor leader passes away

FORMER House Floor Leader George Norita Camacho passed away at the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. on Monday. He was 50 years old.

Camacho, who had oral cancer, served as training coordinator for the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program of Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s Community Guidance Center.

He was also the director of the Criminal Justice Planning Agency.

Prior to serving three terms in the House of Representatives, Camacho was a legislative assistant.

Camacho also dedicated his life to the CNMI’s largest youth sports program, the Saipan Little League Baseball, as manager of the Tanapag Braves. In addition, he was the chairman of Commonwealth Library Council from 2017 to 2023, and its secretary from 2023 to 2024.

On Tuesday, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios ordered that the Commonwealth and U.S. flags be flown at half-staff at the Office of the Governor on Capital Hill and at other government buildings until the sunset of the day of Camacho’s interment.

In a joint statement, the governor and Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang honored Camacho as a dedicated public servant and advocate of the CNMI whose “career in public service and community leadership has left a lasting impact on the CNMI.”

For their part, the officials of the Antonio Camacho Atalig Memorial Library on Rota and its patrons, extended their deepest heartfelt condolences to the family of Camacho who was “the champion in advocating [for] the advancement of community literacy and promoting community access to libraries across the CNMI.”

“Camacho will always be remembered for his dedicated and selfless service to our Rota community. We humbly ask that you keep the families in your thoughts and prayers,” the memorial library officials said.
