
Oscar M. Babauta
THE governor’s special assistant for administration, Oscar Manglona Babauta, passed away at around 9 p.m. on Monday at Guam Memorial Hospital. He was 70.
On Tuesday, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios issued the following statement:
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of the Honorable Oscar M. Babauta, a beloved and respected leader in our community and the Commonwealth. Mr. Babauta’s distinguished career spanned many years of dedicated public service, during which he held several key positions, including Speaker of the House, Secretary of the Department of Public Lands, Special Assistant for Administration, among other key government positions. Throughout his tenure, he was a steadfast advocate for the people of the Commonwealth and played a pivotal role in shaping the future of our community.
“Mr. Babauta’s contributions to public service, his leadership, and his unwavering commitment to the betterment of the Commonwealth will be remembered for generations to come. His dedication to his work and the people he served earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and citizens alike.
“The thoughts and condolences of the entire community are with Mr. Babauta’s wife Lolita, his children and family during this difficult time. His memory and the impact he made on the Commonwealth will not be forgotten.”
In a separate statement, DPL Secretary Teresita Santos said the news of Babauta’s passing “has deeply saddened everyone at the department.”
“He was a respected leader and a true public servant,” she added. “His commitment to the people of the CNMI was evident in every aspect of his career. We are heartbroken by his loss. His dedication to this department and the people of the CNMI will forever be remembered. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Santos said Babauta’s life “was one of dedicated service, and his impact on the CNMI will be felt for generations to come. DPL joins the entire CNMI community in mourning his passing and honoring his memory.”
The Babauta family said Masses are being offered for the repose of his soul at San Antonio Church at 6 p.m., Mount Carmel Cathedral at 6 a.m., and St. Jude Church in Koblerville at 6 p.m.
The Babauta family will announce further details regarding the arrival of his remains and funeral arrangements.
“We ask that we come together in prayer and reflection. May he rest in peace,” the Babauta family said.
