PORT MORESBY (Pacnews) — The Papua New Guinea Eco-Forestry Forum has praised Prime Minister Mekere Morauta, for his recent statements against illegal activities in the forestry sector.
And the Forum has gone a step further and asked that Morauta also “weed out corruption and bad management.”Recently, Morauta publicly described the Kiunga Aiambak project, as illegal and government would take steps stop the unlawful logging.
The prime minister also praised the National Forest Board for taking the Minister for Forests to court to try and stop him from illegally appointing David Nelson as the managing director of the Forest Authority.
“The people of Papua New Guinea want to see strong positive action being taken now by their prime minister, rather than just words,” Eco-Forestry Forum said.
“We have seen numerous illegal activities in the forest sector already this year and tough action is the only way to stop the logging industry destroying governance in the country as a whole,” it said.
“The prime minister must do much more than just make statements if he wants to convince the public that he is really in control of the situation and committed to eradicating corruption,” the Forum statement said.
