Friends of Cemetery urge community to join campaign against illegal dumping of trash

Their group, led by Ed Tenorio, is encouraging  other community members to help maintain the cemetery.

Camacho said their plan includes a year-long monitoring and cleanup of the cemetery, and not just for All Souls Day.

Camacho said they will assign volunteer groups to maintain the cleanliness of the cemetery every month.

Before this year’s All Souls Day observance, he said their group  noted that household trash was being dumped at the cemetery.

“This is not a dumping site,” he added. This problem, however, has persisted despite the installation of trash bins in the area, he said.

To minimize the problem, he said the pastoral parish council has decided to put an enclosure at the north gate behind  Mt. Carmel School.

He said the council has yet to decide whether to close the south passage, which residents who live near the cemetery have been using as an access road.

“It’s really hard to stop,” Camacho said, referring to the indiscriminate dumping of trash at the cemetery.

“We just need to keep  educating the public and informing the people to throw their trash in trash bins,” he added.

Camacho said the cemetery is one of the sites on the island that many tourists visit.

We want to show tourists that our cemetery is clean,” he added.

Those who want to join the Friends of Cemetery may call 234-3000.
