Friends of the Arts to stage ‘My Fair Lady’

Susan Fishman Tudor of the Friends of the Arts said they  received a grant from the NMI Humanities Council for the literary aspects of the show, specifically “how it transfers from Greek mythology to musical theater, and the sociologic correctness of one culture imposing their standards on another culture.”

Tudor said “My Fair Lady” is the musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s play, “Pygmalion.”

Shaw’s character Henry Higgins, a self-possessed linguistics, bets that he can turn an ignorant flower girl into a princess, just by changing the way she speaks.

Friends of the Arts, a 100 percent volunteer group, will mark its 30th season of productions on Saipan next year.

“We have gone through several incarnations — from Saipan Little Theater, the Music Society and most recently the Friends of the Arts,” Tudor said.

She said Friends of the Arts started as a group of talented people who performed for each other.

“My Fair Lady” will be shown at 7 p.m. on April 30 and May 1, and at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on May 2.

Tickets for non-Friends of the Arts members are $15 for adults, $12 for  members and $8 for students. A special discount of one free ticket will be given for $60 worth of tickets.
