THE Department of Public Works, pursuant to the Commonwealth’s building safety code rules and regulations, on Monday declared the former wax museum in Garapan unsafe.

Located on Ginger Avenue, the $2.3 million wax museum was opened about 15 years ago by Sun International Co. Ltd. The museum depicted the ancient life of NMI indigenous people and some scenes from World War II.

Since it was damaged by Super Typhoon Soudelor in 2015, however, the museum never reopened. It was also further damaged by Super Typhoon Yutu in 2018.

In a notice to Kanishima Group President So Boo Kim on Monday, acting DPW Building Safety Officer Yvonne B. Tenorio said they inspected the wax museum on Dec. 19, 2023. Based on their findings “it is evident that the metal sections that hold the exterior wall are in an advanced stage of corrosion and are unable to continue maintaining stability.”

She said based on the building safety code, the museum is an “unsafe building…or…otherwise dangerous to public health, safety or welfare….”

Asked about the unfinished Imperial Pacific International hotel-casino, DPW Secretary Ray N. Yumul said it also poses a hazard to the public.
