Garment firms look at N. Caledonia

SUVA (Radio Fiji/PINA) — Two leading Fiji garment exporters are eyeing the possibility of exporting to the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia.

Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau Chief Executive Jesoni Vitusagavulu said Ranjit Solanki and Mark Halabe were intensifying their exports efforts.

The move follows a successful trade mission to New Caledonia led by Foreign Minister Kaliopate Tavola.

The export of garments to New Caledonia comes under the provisions of the Cotonou Agreement between the European Union and the African, Caribbean, Pacific countries.

Thirteen members of Fiji’s business community traveled to Noumea to explore ways of enhancing trade and economic relations.

Solanki said they were looking at this market because of the decline in their Australian and New Zealand markets.

They have to look at alternate export markets, he said.
