Garment worker settles labor case for $200

A WORKER who accused a garment firm of committing various labor abuses agreed to settle his labor case for $200.

The employer, American Pacific Textile, Inc., maintains that it has no any liability to the complaining worker, Zhu Ming Zhe, saying the $200 is a “nuisance settlement” so that the firm will be spared of spending any more money defending against what “it believes are the frivolous and unmeritorious claims of the complainant.”

“American Pacific Textile, Inc. has paid…complainant…for full settlement of all claims complainant has of any nature whatsoever against American Pacific Textile, Inc., including but not limited to all claims for unpaid overtime, curfew claims, human rights claims, claims of peonage or involuntary servitude, recruitment fee claims and any claims for inadequate food or housing or overcharging for food or housing,” states the stipulated settlement agreement between the employer and the worker.

The firm was represented by attorney Robert O’Connor. Hearing Officer Vicente C. Seman reviewed and approved the settlement agreement.

Zhu was granted permission to seek another employer in the commonwealth within 45 days starting April 2.
