Virginia C. Hernandez appeared in court for a bail hearing yesterday on charges of theft and theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received.
She was represented by Assistant Public Defender Douglas Hartig.
The prosecutor, Assistant Attorney General Kathleen Busenkell, recommended a $7,000 cash bail, saying that Hernandez was a flight risk.
Hernandez was arrested at the Saipan international airport at 1:34 a.m. yesterday.
Associate Judge David A. Wiseman imposed a $5,000 cash bail and set the preliminary hearing for June 17. The arraignment is scheduled for June 22.
Detective Joaquin I. Deleon Guerrero stated in his affidavit that the chief auditor of Delta Management Corp., which runs three Shell gas stations on island, conducted an audit on the accounts ledger on May 29 and discovered that $7,000 was missing from Island Marine Sports, a client of the Shell Susupe branch.
The chief auditor then informed the operations manager who, in turn, told her that Hernandez handled the daily sales reports for the Island Marine Sports account.
Deleon Guerrero said Hernandez admitted to the auditor and the operations manager that she took the money, asked that it be hidden from their employer as she promised to pay the amount before the end of this month.
The auditor and operations manager, however, told Hernandez that the missing amount would still show up when the reports were verified and compared with the back-up data in the company’s computer.
On the following day, Hernandez sent a text message to the chief auditor and stated she would pay $1,500.
The auditor refused to take the money, saying the complete amount should be paid.
The auditor called their employer, James Arenovski, and informed him of what happened.
A complaint was filed against Hernandez on May 31.
Investigators confiscated several Delta Management receipts, documents and bundles of gift certificates from Hernandez’s house.
It was learned that the receipts and charge invoices were part of the discrepancies in the Island Marine Sports account.
