AFTER two consecutive rollbacks since February, the prices of gasoline on Saipan have increased by 10 cents.

On Wednesday, Mobil Oil Marianas raised its regular gasoline price to $5.269 a gallon from $5.169 a gallon, and its premium gas price to $5.719 a gallon from $5.619 a gallon. The diesel price remains $5.389 a gallon.

Shell Marianas followed suit Wednesday night.

Tinian Fuel Services’ regular gas price as of Thursday was $7.099 a gallon, and the diesel price was $7.479 a gallon.

On Rota, Calvo Enterprises’ regular gas price was $6.54 a gallon and the diesel price was $9.82 a gallon.

Legislative Bureau staff member Peoris Besong said people who enjoy driving around to appreciate the island’s beauty won’t be able to do so due to high gasoline prices. If fuel prices continue to rise, he said, “strolling” will soon become a luxury.

For residents like him, Besong added, all they can do is drive to work from home and back — no more “strolling.”

According to Reuters, oil prices rose on Wednesday “buoyed by government data showing U.S. crude oil and fuel inventories fell last week and by mounting concerns about tighter global supply following the U.S. threat of tariffs on nations buying Venezuelan crude.”

Brent crude futures settled up 77 cents, or 1.05%, at $73.79 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures settled up 65 cents, or 0.94%, at $69.65 a barrel, Reuters reported.
