SUVA (Pacnews) — Fiji’s prime minister told parliament yesterday that the overthrow of Mahendra Chaudhry’s People’s Coalition government in May 2000 was part of “God’s plan,” the Fiji Sun reports.
Laisenia Qarase made the comments during a debate on a Labor Party motion seeking a judicial inquiry into the agricultural assistance scam that the Chaudhry’s Labor Party says was a vote-buying scheme led by Qarase’s interim administration prior to last year’s election.
The motion was defeated by six votes.
Qarase said his SDL party “won because it was God’s plan. The events of May 2000 happened because it was God’s plan.”
In response, Chaudhry said: “The devil can also quote from the Bible.”
