GOP torn between Tenorio, Sablan

Party  President Ed Tenorio, in an interview, said it has come to the attention of the GOP leadership that  a group of Republicans is supporting the Independent candidacy of  Gregorio C. Sablan, the Election Commission’s executive director who is on leave.

Ed Tenorio said he is now drafting a letter addressed to their members, primarily to some House Republicans who are not supporting the party’s candidate.

There are also former party leaders who are openly campaigning for Sablan, he added.

Party insiders said  Precinct 1 is no longer as solid for Pete A. Tenorio as before.

He is also facing a “serious problem” in Precinct 4 where some GOP leaders have openly backed Sablan right from the very start of the campaign period.

A long-time Republican, Pete A. Tenorio served as lt. governor from 1982 to 1990. He was elected Washington representative in 2001 and won a second term in 2005.

Sablan, for his part, served in the House from 1982 to 1986 as a Democrat. In the 1997 elections, however, he supported the GOP ticket.
