Governor OKs Tinian gaming tax hike

GOVERNOR Arnold I. Palacios on Tuesday last week approved House Local Bill 23-53, which increases the internet gambling revenue tax on Tinian.

Authored by Rep. Patrick H. San Nicolas, H.L.B. 23-53 is now Tinian Local Law 23-14.

It amends the Tinian gaming law to increase the internet gambling revenue tax to 10% from 5%. The new local law also requires that the licensee pays the tax monthly.

S.L.L. 23-14 states that “in the interest of increasing the revenue generated by the Tinian gaming industry, it is lawful and necessary” to amend the law.

Earlier this month, the Tinian and Aguigan Legislative Delegation unanimously passed Sen. Jude U. Hofschneider’s Senate Local Bill 23-5, which would authorize the Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission to grant a 20-year internet gaming license to gaming investors on Tinian.

S.L.B. 23-5 states that in the interest of promoting the Tinian gaming industry, it is necessary to allow internet gaming “in order to be globally competitive” and compliant with U.S. laws and regulations.  The bill would require an age verification software “reasonably designed to block access to minors.”
