Through Executive Order 2020-22, Torres also renews his order directing the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office, through the CNMI Covid-19 Task Force and in partnership with the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation, to undertake necessary Covid-19 containment measures by means of the development of emergency directives to protect the health and safety of the public.
This renewal takes effect immediately and remains in effect for 30 days from the date the new executive order was issued, or Friday, Nov. 13.
“Covid-19 is a highly contagious disease that can lead to serious illness and death, especially for the elderly and people who have underlying medical conditions. There is no confirmed treatment for Covid-19 other than quarantine, isolation and containment,” the governor stated in his executive order.
“The potential pandemic impact of Covid-19 on the Commonwealth cannot be understated. Action is necessary to protect the health and safety of our children, our senior citizens, businesses, and all other CNMI residents and visitors.”
He added, “Covid-19 continues to pose a significant and imminent threat of harm to the community, environment and people of the CNMI and thus emergency declarations are necessary to respond, quarantine and ensure the prevention of or containment of Covid-19 in the CNMI.”
As of Wednesday, the CNMI reported a total of 77 Covid-19 cases since March with two deaths — a 70-year-old man who had contact with a confirmed case and had underlying medical conditions, and a 77-year-old woman, also with underlying medical conditions.
Of the 77 cases, 51 were travel-related and 26 were community acquired. Fifty-nine of the cases have recovered, but 16 remain active.
