Green Energy Solutions aims to lower Guam home power bills

As president of the new Green Energy Solutions Inc., Lam is ready and confident to launch his business in the next month or two, which would provide affordable solar energy systems and lower power bills in the long term.

It is Lam’s hope to reduce power bills for the island so residents can enjoy clean energy without having to dish out so much money each month.

“On Guam we’re paying so much for the power bill,” he said. “And I want to do something for Guam to save people’s power bills.”

The inception of Lam’s company began when he ordered a grid-type solar power system for his two-story Tumon home.

According to Lam, his system only uses energy collected from the sun. The solar panel, or photovoltaic modules known as PV, are installed outside the home and are used for absorbing energy from the sun. A box collects all the direct current energies, known as DC, and delivers them to an inverter inside the home. The inverter then converts the DC to alternating current energy, known as AC, and that energy is sent through the power panel and delivered to the electric meter.

Throughout the day, Lam said, his electric meter goes backwards. By the time the sun sets, the meter begins to move forward.

Prior to installing the grid-type solar power system, Lam said he spent about $700 a month on his power bill. Last month, Lam’s power bill cost only $47.

After testing the system in his home, he felt he was ready to offer the cost-saving measure to the rest of Guam, he stated.

Upon creating the system, Lam had to make sure it offered two main benefits: affordability and low-maintenance.

Green Energy Solutions Inc. partnered up with Motech Industries Inc. —  a Taiwan-based company that manufactures, designs, retails and installs solar power systems.

“Guam is the perfect place for solar energy,” said Lam, who noted while some places can only get about four hours of energy a day, Guam can generate power for about 10 hours in the daytime.

Both Lam and his Director and Field Operation Manager Patrick Quintanilla stressed the values of the company and how customers can capitalize on savings through the customizable systems GESI can build. Since the systems are customizable, clients can pick and choose various sizes to fit their needs and continue to stack upon their existing systems. Flexible financing is also available.

“Not only do we stress cost savings, but also conservative measures,” Quintanilla said. “If people take conservative measures in their house, then that would add on to the cost savings too.”
