Groups, schools to benefit from Garment Workers Trust Fund

U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex Munson granted on Friday a motion of Trust Fund chairman Timothy Bellas who requested for a court order approving the disbursement of trust fund as recommended by the trustees; an accounting of the funds; and the fourth interim request for approval of fees and expenses.

“If there is no opposition by any interested party or the court has no concerns with the contents, within 15 days from the date of the final report is filed, the trustees shall be deemed automatically discharged from their obligations without further order from this court and the matter closed for all purposes,” Munson stated in his four -page order.

The beneficiaries are Karidat which will receive $125,000; the American Red Cross, $100,000; the Micronesian Legal Services Corp., $85,000; St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, $60,000; Pet Assistance and Welfare Services, $50,000; and the Center for Living Independently in CNMI, $30,000.   

The Northern Marianas Judiciary Historical Society, the Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy Systems Inc., the Northern Marianas Trade Institute, and the Family Wellness Organization will each receive $25,000.

The NMI Council for Humanities, the Saipan Swim Club and Whispering Palms School each will benefit $20,000, while Saipan Southern High School will get $15,000.

The court approved over $7,000 for the payment of attorney’s fees and costs for the period Oct. 2009 to Jan. 14, 2010.

Operational expenses for the same period amounting to over $6,000 were likewise approved.

Expenditures for the repatriation of former garment workers from point of hire were granted in the amount of over $11,000.

Expenditures for medical assistance payments to former garments workers were  approved in the amount of over $10,000.

The court granted expenditures for one-time charitable donation of $350 each for 159 former garment workers, amounting to over $59,000.
