As part of the evacuation efforts, “as a prudent action, dependents will be evacuated and [Naval Facilities Engineering Command] will play a critical role in support of that effort,” a reliable source told Variety.
This means that Guam will play a role “in some way in a very short time” in the massive evacuation plans being drawn up.
Sen. Judi Guthertz said she had spoken to the governor about the possibility of taking the lead in coordinating efforts to fly and house displaced Japanese citizens, as well as American civilian and military dependents, from Japan to Guam.
Sen. Tina Muna Barnes said “no one caused this horrific disaster, but this level of human tragedy harms us all and we must help wherever we can. Whether it was the Vietnam era refugees 40 years ago, or Kurds in the 1990s, Guam has always been a place of sanctuary to those who needed it.”
Barnes said Guam’s people are ready and eager to come to the aid “of all who are living through this nightmare.”
