Cruz is the author of the bill that proposes the legalization of gay marriage on Guam.
The Humanitarian Award was presented to Terry Aguon of the Department of Public Health and Social Services.
The Flame Tree Awards recognize and celebrate the contributions and talents of the island’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community and straight allies.
The awards were given to those who have made a difference in government, community and social service, business, social justice and the arts.
Cruz was not present to accept the award. He is currently off island. Accepting on his behalf was Sanctuary executive director Sarah Thomas Nededog.
The Transgendered Person of the Year was given to Trinity Hufana.
Aspiring Youth of the Year was awarded to Guam Youth Congress Speaker Derrick Hills.
The Untouchables House of Diosa was named Entertainer of the Year.
Straight ally of the Year went to University of Guam social work professor Dr. Vivian Dames.
Jae Flores of Guamania company was named Executive/Professional of the Year.
The Untouchables, comprised of about 11 members, were elated that they beat the other nominees. Kelly San Agustin went up first exclaiming “This is a shocker!” and looked for Bobby Solis, who was also nominated.
“You are truly an inspiration to all of us,” said San Agustin.
Aguon was recognized for his work including HIV/AIDS awareness among the gay community and non-gay community.
