Hufana, an environmental services technician at Guam Memorial Hospital and the senior manager of the Untouchables House of Diosa, a performing troupe, told Variety that she did not expect to win.
“This is the first pageant that I joined and I’m still shocked about winning,” Hufana told reporters.
Asked what her edge was, she answered: “Being fat and I’m sticking to that story.”
Hufana is the recipient of the 2010 transgendered person of the year award for Guam’s Alternative Lifestyle Association’s flame tree awards.
As the 2011 Queen Marianas title holder, Hufana said she will spread more awareness to the world regarding the stigma of negativity associated with being gay.
“We would like the world to know that we are humans and we want to be accepted and loved for what we are,” Hufana said.
Hufana, who flew in from Guam on Friday for the contest, will be leaving for Guam again on Wednesday.
Payne Evangelista of Tinian is the first runner up. She also won the Best in Fantasy Costume Award. Miranda Kar, who described herself as “amazing, sexy and smart,” emerged as second runner up.
Kim Kardashian, who won the Miss Talent competition for her rendition of Barbara Streisand’s “The Main Event” held on May 14 at the Hard Rock Café, won three more awards on Saturday: Miss Photogenic, Best in Evening Gown and Best in Lingerie. Milkshake, who represented Rota, was named Miss Congeniality.
The two other contestants were Dayanara Torres who represented Sariguan, and Prosti La’hore who presented Alamagan.
A Gela & Friends Production Inc. president Elsa Duenas Nieto said they were pleased with the unexpected turnout.
“This is our first event and we didn’t expect much but we would like to thank the community for the support that we got,” Nieto said.
Nieto said working with the candidates for the past eight months had been fruitful.
“We’ve seen the candidates develop and improve their communication and personality skills, and we commend the efforts that they had exerted for the pageant,” Nieto said.
Part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Operation Home Front which sends care packages for servicemembers deployed abroad.
“Through this event, we would like to extend our thanks to our servicemembers who bravely serve the nation and protect our freedoms,” Nieto said.
They will organize more events to benefit community programs in the future, with the children’s ward at the hospital as their next target beneficiary.
Judges for the pageant were Marianas Variety president Laila Y. Boyer, DFS assistant general manager for Saipan and Palau Vorasuda Luna, and Guam fashion designer and makeup artist Crimsona Kaiser.
